Dykema Earns 2022-23 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty field hockey's Bethany Dykema has been named the 2022-23 BIG EAST Conference Sport Excellence Award winner for field hockey.
Dykema is one of only 22 BIG EAST Conference student-athletes to earn the award. The Sports Excellence Awards are handed out to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accomplishments and volunteer service to the community and chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR Council).
Dykema is the second student-athlete in Liberty field hockey history to receive the award, joining Serena Barr. Barr received the 2016-17 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award in the Lady Flames' first year in the conference.
Dykema earned her bachelor's degree in exercise science – strength & conditioning from Liberty in Dec. 2022, achieving a 3.84 GPA. The four-time BIG EAST All-Academic team member is currently pursuing a master's degree in human performance – strength training & conditioning while maintaining a 3.94 GPA.
On the field hockey pitch, Dykema earned NFHCA All-America second team honors last season while also being named to the NFHCA All-South Region first team. She is a three-time NFHCA All-South Region team (two first team, one second team) member and a three-time BIG EAST All-Conference team member (two first team, one second team). The defender from Newport News, Va. is also a BIG EAST All-Tournament team member, BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and four-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recipient.
Villanova and Xavier led the way with four honorees each, while Georgetown and Seton Hall both had three recipients. Liberty field hockey is the only Liberty Athletics program in the BIG EAST Conference.
Dykema was recently invited to train with the U.S. Women's National Team after she competed in the 2023 Senior Nexus Championship this summer. Dykema and the Lady Flames open the 2023 season at home against Kent State, Aug. 25.
