Liberty won a pair of throwing events on day one of the Charlotte Invitational, Friday at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center. All-American Kevin Nedrick got the day started with his fourth consecutive men’s discus victory (194-4) and John Hicks took top honors in the men’s hammer (204-9).
Nedrick’s 194-4 effort came in the fifth round, landing just one inch shy of his ASUN Conference all-time record set at the Virginia Quadrangular on April 1. He led a trio of Flames who finished inside the top five.
Competing in his hometown, Desmond Coleman reached 183-2 for third place. Fellow redshirt freshman Christian Hicks placed fifth with a throw of 168-6 that added more than four feet to his previous personal best.
In the men’s hammer, Hicks’ 204-9 mark in round two held up for his second triumph of the season. Stuart Folkerts (175-3) followed in seventh place.
Liberty’s only athlete to compete on the track oval, Jack Cottrell notched a third-place 5K finish in 14:30.39.
Annika Hantho took part in both women’s throwing events, headlined by her fifth-place showing (154-3) in the discus.
