Ouedraogo Wins Penn Relays Triple Jump in Program-Record 52-4.5

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Cool, rainy, windy conditions could not prevent Liberty from recording some stellar performances on Saturday, the third and final day of the 130th Penn Relays at Franklin Field. All-American Gilles Ouedraogo's outdoor debut resulted in a men's triple jump title and new program record of 52-4.5, while Ben Shughart, Isabella Frattura and Christian Hicks also recorded top-three finishes in their respective events.
Liberty wrapped up a successful three days in Philadelphia with two new program records (also Allie Zealand's 15:26.38 5K on Thursday) and three event victories (also Zealand in the women's 5K and Trevor Veenstra in the men's discus college section on Friday).
Men's Day 3 Recap
Competing for the first time since placing 12th in the NCAA indoor triple jump final on March 14, Ouedraogo only took one attempt. That leap, measuring a wind-legal 52-4.5, was sufficient to win Saturday afternoon's competition by a foot.
The Burkina Faso native broke the program record of 52-1.25 set by Clarence Powell at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet on May 29, 2010 in Greensboro, N.C. Ouedraogo now owns the Liberty indoor (53-1) and outdoor (52-4.5) triple jump standards.
In his first meet in five weeks, Pennsylvania native Shughart took runner-up honors in the men's javelin's championship section. His 218-6 effort in round four fell just four feet behind event champion Collin Torres of Army, one day before Shughart's 23rd birthday.
Building upon Veenstra's college section victory from Friday, Hicks came in third in Saturday's men's discus championship section at 190-2. The redshirt senior was only an inch behind runner-up Iosif Papa of UMBC.
Women's Day 3 Recap
After recording back-to-back top-10 finishes in the Penn Relays high school javelin competition for Sparta High School in 2024 and 2025, New Jersey native Frattura reached 156-4 to place third in the championship section on Saturday.
Bethany Tate reached an impressive 51-5.5 on her first shot put attempt, a mark which stood up for ninth place in the championship section.
