Liberty’s women’s sprint medley quartet of Isis Brooks, Jezelle Shaw, Dawn Hilton and Naomi Armstrong capped off a rainy, chilly Friday at Franklin Field with a fifth-place finish at the 127th Penn Relays.
Brooks (women’s 100) was also one of three Flames to successfully qualify to Saturday event finals. Omari Lewis and Donald McClinton will represent Liberty in the men’s 100 final.
Day 2 Recap
Brooks blazed out of the starting blocks on the relay’s 200-meter leadoff leg, giving the Lady Flames a lead they would never relinquish. Armstrong later sealed Liberty’s heat victory with a 2:11.50 split for the 800-meter anchor carry.
The Lady Flames’ time of 3:59.28 placed fifth of 19 teams in the event. It is the seventh-fastest clocking in program history and Liberty’s fastest since 2019.
Racing in a downpour and battling a 0.8 m/s headwind, Brooks won her 100 heat in 11.85, automatically punching her ticket to Saturday’s 2:23 p.m. event final.
McClinton (10.56) and Lewis (10.66) later qualified for the men’s 100 final with a 1-2 finish in a heat that included a 1.0 m/s headwind and Houston Olympian Shaun Maswanganyi. The Liberty duo will compete in the final Saturday at 2:26 p.m.
