Thunderstorms in the Charlottesville area delayed the start of Saturday’s Virginia Challenge events by two and a half hours and left cool, damp conditions in their wake. As a result, only a handful of Liberty Flames competed at Lannigan Field, with season-best efforts by Isaiah Schulties (1:52.04 men’s 800) and Zack Weekman (53.82 men’s 400 hurdles) headlining the light afternoon of activity.
Schulties’ 1:52.04 clocking earned a fifth-place finish in the men’s 800, Liberty’s highest event placement of the day in Charlottesville. He was joined in the top 10 by Ally Kipchirchir, who ran 1:52.31 for ninth.
Weekman’s 53.82 effort was good for sixth place in the men’s 400 hurdles. He improved upon his previous season best of 54.69 and fell just shy of his 53.58 lifetime best. Weekman became the fourth Flame to break 54 seconds this season, joining Rayan Holmes, Felix Lawrence and Josh Blalock, the last of whom also joined the sub-54 club on Saturday at the WildCat Twilight.
Running the first 800 of her collegiate career, freshman Katie Sigerud posted a team-best 2:12.78 for 25th place in the event. Competing unattached, the Lady Flames’ Katelyn Locker came in fourth in a personal-best 2:06.61.
