Reagan Underwood and USA Field Hockey captured the gold medal at the Junior Pan American Championships, defeating perennial power Argentina in a shootout.
Underwood, a starter in the gold medal game, scored the only goal in regulation for Team USA and tallied the winner in the shootout, lifting the American squad to a 1-1 (4-1 shootout) victory at the Wildey Hockey Centre in the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
This is the second Junior Pan American Championship (JPAC) gold medal in history for Team USA and first since 2008. By virtue of its top-three finish at JPAC, the United States squad receive a berth into the 2023 FIH Junior Hockey World Cup, scheduled for Dec. 6-17 in Santiago, Chile.
"Reagan's growth over the past 12 months as both a leader and hockey player are nothing short of exceptional. Reagan came in with a high ceiling and has taken full advantage of every opportunity to grow," said Liberty Field Hockey Head Coach Nikki Parsley-Blocker. "Due to her trajectory, I am not surprised by her ability to execute under high pressure on a big stage. Proud is certainly an understatement in this case!"
Underwood was one of 18 players representing the U.S. U-21 Squad at the nine-day championship event in St. Michael, Barbabos. The rising Liberty senior garnered selection based on her performance at a Pre-JPAC Preparation in Charlotte, N.C.
