Despite striking out 16 Golden Eagles, the Liberty Flames fell to No. 18 Southern Miss 3-0 Friday at Pete Taylor Park to open the 2023 season.
Last season, the Flames struck out 16 or more opponents in a game five times in 60 games.
Southern Miss scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth inning in its victory. 2022 All-American Tanner Hall, Tyler Martin and Justin Storm combined to hold the Flames to one hit, an infield single by designated hitter Victor Castillo in the fifth inning.
Catcher Blake Johnson had three hits, including a home run in the contest for Southern Miss.
Liberty drops to 0-1. Southern Miss moves to 1-0.
