
No. 16 Duke Outlasts Liberty 8-5 in 8 Innings

Liberty, playing its second extra-inning contest in as many days, overcame an early 4-0 deficit before tying Duke at 5-5. The Blue Devils scored three unanswered runs in the eighth for the 8-5 win over the Lady Flames, Friday at Bill Barber Park as part of the Mark Campbell Collegiate Invitational.
Duke evened its record to 2-2 with a pair of wins today, while the Lady Flames (0-2) fell 1-0 to No. 1 Oklahoma in eight innings last night before dropping an eight-inning game to Duke today.

- Duke outhit Liberty 14-6 for the game, with the Lady Flames committing the game’s only two errors. The Blue Devils left 10 on base, while Liberty stranded two.
- Jala Wright (1-1) earned the win with five innings of relief, striking out nine while allowing one run on one hit and walking one.
- Paige Bachman (0-1) drew the loss, yielding four runs (three earned) on eight hits, striking out a career-high seven batters in 6 1/3 innings of relief pitching.

Turning Point
- With Liberty trailing, Bachman held the Devils down from the fourth through seventh innings, retiring 11 out of the last 12 batters through the end of the seventh.
- Liberty tied the game at 5-5 when Howard scored from third on a wild pitch with one out in the fifth. However, Maddy Tuck finished the inning stuck on third base.
- Duke scored three times with the International tiebreaker in effect to build an 8-5 lead in the eighth, while Wright struck out all three batters she faced in the eighth to wrap up the win.
Beyond the Box Score
- Duke leads the all-time series against the Lady Flames, 3-2. The last meeting between the two teams before today came in the 2022 NCAA Durham Regional, a 5-0 Duke win.
- Devyn Howard has had a hit in each of her last seven games, including the last five games of the 2022 season and tonight.
- Hudson’s homer gave her 21 for her career. She hit a career-high 17 homers last season, tying the program’s single-season record for homers by a catcher.
