Liberty will tip off its 49th women's basketball season and its first as a Conference USA member on Monday, when the Lady Flames host Frostburg State for their lone November home game.
The Lady Flames are 0-1 all-time versus the Bobcats, but the teams have not met since Jan. 15, 1979, when Liberty Head Coach Carey Green was a senior at Coastal Carolina.
Beginning his 25th season at Liberty, Green could make history on Monday. A win would be No. 548 of his coaching career with the Lady Flames, making him the winningest coach all-time at Liberty in any sport, an honor Green currently shares with former softball coach Paul Wetmore (1994-2013).
A victory would also be the Lady Flames' 15th in a row at Liberty Arena, matching the team's longest winning streak at the facility. The Lady Flames are 42-3 at Liberty Arena since it opened in December 2020.
Half of Liberty's 2023-24 roster (seven of 14 players) consists of newcomers. Junior guard Emma Hess headlines the returnees. The Preseason All-CUSA selection is Liberty's top returning scorer (8.5 ppg) and was just one triple shy of the program record a year ago, finishing with 63.

Notes and Anecdotes

While Monday's matinee will mark Liberty's 2023-24 season opener, it will be classified as an exhibition for Frostburg State, which officially tips things off on Friday at home vs. Winston-Salem State.
Liberty will try to slow down sophomore forward Emilee Weakley. She led Division II in scoring with 25.5 ppg as a freshman last season and and dropped in 32 during a 97-66 exhibition loss at Towson on Oct. 30.
This will be just the second meeting between Liberty and Frostburg State and the first since Jan. 15, 1979. The 44-year gap between matchups is the longest in program history for the Lady Flames.
The Lady Flames have faced Frostburg State Head Coach Jenna Eckleberry twice before (Dec. 19, 2015 and Feb. 21, 2021) when Eckleberry coached Shepherd, winning both contests by an average of 10 points.
A win on Monday would be the Lady Flames' 15th straight home victory, matching their longest winning streak at Liberty Arena. Liberty also won the first 15 games it played at the facility, spanning Dec. 1, 2020-Nov. 18, 2021.
Monday will mark Liberty's only November home game. The Lady Flames take to the road for their next six outings, five of which will be played in Texas.

Lady Flames in Season Openers

Liberty is 23-25 all-time in season openers, including 15-8 at home and 11-13 under Carey Green.
Liberty is just 4-7 in its last 11 lid-lifters following a 69-48 loss to Richmond at Liberty Arena in the 2022-23 opener.
The Lady Flames have not lost back-to-back season openers since starting three straight seasons at 0-1 between 2012-13 and 2014-15.
This is the first time Liberty has tipped off three consecutive seasons at home since the 2004-05 through 2006-07 campaigns.

On the Verge of History

Carey Green enters his 25th season as Liberty's head coach with 547 career victories, leaving him one win shy of making history.
Green is tied with former softball coach and Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Paul Wetmore as the winningest coach in Liberty Athletics history. Wetmore recorded 547 coaching wins in 20 seasons (1994-2013).
Green has been at the helm for more than two-thirds of Liberty's 818 all-time women's basketball victories and has led the Lady Flames to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances.
