
Liberty Falls to No. 4 UCLA

The No. 4 UCLA Bruins defeated the Liberty Flames 5-2 Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
After Liberty tied the match at 2-2 during the 38th minute, the host Bruins scored three unanswered goals for the victory.
Midfielders Seth Clark and Gora Gora scored goals for the Flames in the contest. The goals were the first two allowed by UCLA in its first three games.
The Bruins had not even allowed a shot on goal in their first two contests.
Liberty drops its first contest of 2022, falling to 1-1-1. UCLA remains unbeaten, moving to 3-0.

Turning Point
After Liberty forward Luke Eberle fired a shot early in the second half, forcing a diving save by UCLA goalkeeper Nate Crockford, the Bruins took a two-goal lead during the 52nd minute. Off a scramble in the 18-yard box, a ball in front was put in the Flames’ net by a Liberty defender. The own goal gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead, the first time Liberty trailed by two goals this season.

- Tonight’s contest was the first for Liberty in the state of California in the program’s history. The match was also the first meeting between Liberty and UCLA on the soccer field.
- For the first time since 2001, the Flames faced nationally ranked teams in back-to-back matches.
- UCLA outshot Liberty, 9-6. The Bruins had six of their shots go on goal, while the Flames had four shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at 3-3.
- Clark and Gora each scored their first goals of the season.
- Liberty midfielder Marko Mitrevski had an assist on Clark’s goal. Mitrevski has pointed in all three Flames’ games this season. He has a goal and two assists.
- Danny Cordero and Blake Franzen split the goalkeeping duties for the Flames, each playing a half. Cordero made two saves in the first half, while Franzen did not record a save.

Liberty returns home to begin ASUN Conference play on Sept. 10. The Flames will host the Bellarmine Knights at Osborne Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
