Liberty’s men’s 4 x 100 relay quartet of Brandon Letts, Donald McClinton, Christian Lyon and Diamantae Griffin wrapped up a historic season with one more history-making race, Wednesday afternoon at Hayward Field. Competing in the first running event of the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Flames placed 12th in the 4 x 100 semifinals in a Liberty and ASUN-record time of 39.08, earning second team All-America honors.
The Flames placed fourth in the first of three semifinal heats and 12th overall among the 24 relay squads which qualified to Eugene. Liberty ended up just 0.09 seconds behind Clemson, the ninth and final qualifier to Friday’s men’s 4 x 100 relay final.
Liberty’s second team All-America distinction makes the Flames the first men’s relay squad in program and ASUN Conference history ever to become All-Americans at the NCAA Division I level.
The Flames’ 39.08 clocking broke their own Liberty and ASUN standard of 39.23 from the ASUN final on May 14. It was the sixth time in eight races this season that Liberty has broken both records. Prior to this year, the Liberty 4 x 100 relay record had stood since 1996 and the ASUN all-time mark had been on the books since 2007.
