No. 12 Tennessee broke open a tight game with a three-run fifth inning, earning a 7-2 win over Liberty on Wednesday at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.
With the win, their fourth in a row, the Lady Vols improve to 34-13 on the season. Liberty (35-14) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped with its first loss since April 12 against Virginia Tech.

Notable Numbers
- Tennessee outhit Liberty 8-7, with the Lady Flames committing a season-high four errors. Both teams left eight runners on base.
- Ashley Rogers (7-5) earned the win for the Lady Vols, allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out four in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Erin Edmoundson yielded one run on two hits in 2 2/3 relief innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.
- Liberty’s Emily Kirby (9-5) drew the loss, giving up two runs on three hits, walking two and fanning two in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Karlie Keeney pitched four innings, yielding five runs on five hits, walking two and fanning two. McKenzie Wagoner tossed 2/3 of an inning.

Turning Point
- Liberty left three on base to end the second inning when Morgan fanned Paige Bachman with the bases loaded. After the Lady Vols added a third-inning run to make it 2-0, Liberty rallied in the bottom of the third. Hudson singled with one out, and Allan walked. Griffin then hit an RBI single to right center. Rogers managed to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a popout.
- Tennessee added to its lead, building a 7-1 advantage before Hudson’s solo shot in the bottom of the seventh set the final score at 7-2.
Beyond the Box Score
- The Lady Flames and Lady Vols wore purple ribbons in their hair to honor the memory of James Madison catcher Lauren Bernett, who passed away this week. The teams also observed a moment of silence in her memory.
- Today’s game was the rematch of an elimination game at the 2021 NCAA Knoxville Regional, which Liberty won 6-4 to knock the Lady Vols out of the postseason. That was Liberty’s first-ever win over Tennessee in softball. Tennessee now leads the all-time series 21-1.
- Tennessee entered the game ranked 11th nationally with 1.59 home runs per game and recorded three homers today.
- Liberty is now 2-9 this season against Top 25 teams, including 2-3 versus nationally-ranked opponents at home.
- Prior to today, Liberty had gone six straight games without allowing over four hits and seven games in a row without allowing more than three runs.
- Hudson recorded her third three-hit game of the season. She also hit her team-leading 14th home run. It was her fourth homer all-time against a Top 25 team.
- Hudson’s 14 homers are the most by a Liberty catcher since Ashley Williams hit 14 homers in 2006.
- Liberty has posted three winning streaks of at least seven games this season and has gone 21-2 in its last 23 games.
- Liberty went 4-1 on its homestand, which included a win over then No. 9 Duke last Wednesday and a three-game sweep of Jacksonville over the weekend.

Liberty returns to the road for its next four games, beginning with a three-game ASUN series at North Florida, Saturday and Sunday. North Florida enters the weekend in second place in the ASUN East Division at 17-4. The Lady Flames, at 18-0 in ASUN play, can secure the ASUN East Division title and No. 1 overall seed for the 2022 ASUN Softball Championship with one win at UNF.
