
Liberty Tops Hofstra 6-3

Liberty extended its winning streak to four games, downing Hofstra 6-3 on Saturday at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.
The Lady Flames (4-5) have gone 4-0 at THE Spring Games this weekend, including wins over Ohio State and Hofstra. Liberty opened its season at the Northern Lights/Southern Nights Tournament at this same complex. The Pride is 0-3 so far this season heading into tomorrow’s game against Stetson.

Notable Numbers
- Both teams recorded eight hits. Hofstra committed three errors compared to one for the Lady Flames. Liberty left 11 runners on base, leaving the bases loaded in the third inning, while Hofstra stranded six.
- Megan Johnson (1-0) earned the win for Liberty, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits, striking out a season-high six batters while walking none.
- Nikki Mullin (0-1) drew the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits, walking two and striking out on in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Julia Apsel pitched four innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits, walking two and fanning two.
- Liberty’s Caroline Hudson batted 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and one run scored, while Kara Canetto went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Lou Allan extended her on base streak to nine games, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
- Hofstra’s Chelsea Manto went 3-for-4 with a double, while Madison McKevitt batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and Sam Ward hit 2-for-3.
Turning Point
- Liberty built a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings, and led 5-1 after Hudson’s RBI double in the top of the sixth inning. Hofstra closed the gap to 5-3, scoring two runs on one hit and benefiting from a Liberty error in the bottom of the frame.
- The Lady Flames added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Hofstra then appeared to narrow the deficit to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly, but the runner was called out for leaving third base early, ending he game.
Beyond the Box Score
- Liberty has won all three meetings all-time against Hofstra. The first meeting between these two programs came in the first game of the 2018 NCAA Columbia Regional. The Lady Flames earned their first NCAA postseason win in program history, outlasting the Pride 2-0 in 10 innings. Liberty went on to its first of two NCAA Regional finals appearances to date.
- The Lady Flames have outscored opponents a combined 31-5 so far this weekend. Liberty came into the weekend being outscored 27-8 in their first five contests.
- This is the second time in the last three years that Liberty has played its first 10 games in the state of Florida. The Lady Flames opened the 2020 season by playing in the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic before competing in the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
