
No. 16 Liberty Matches Program Record for Shutouts in 5-0 BIG EAST Win at Villanova

No. 16 Liberty matched a program record for shutouts in a season with a 5-0 BIG EAST Conference win over the Villanova Wildcats, Friday afternoon at the Villanova Field Hockey Field.
The Lady Flames' shutout was its eighth of the season. All eight Liberty victories this year have been by shutout. Liberty (8-4) remains unbeaten and in first place in the BIG EAST at 4-0. The Lady Flames' clean sheet today matches the 2013 squad, which also recorded eight shutouts and a 17-5 record.
Villanova falls to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST.
Liberty bolsters its record to 9-0 all-time against Villanova and 8-0 in BIG EAST matches. Charlotte Vaanhold paced the offense with her third two-goal game of the year. Emily Dykema, Bethany Dykema and Daniella Rhodes all scored as well.

Turning Point
Liberty broke open a scoreless game with four goals in the second quarter. The Lady Flames' first goal came in the 16th minute, as Emily Dykema found the back of the cage on a penalty corner, assisted by Jodie Conolly, for a 1-0 lead.
At the 20:14 mark, Bethany Dykema scored on a short corner from the left side. Just over two minutes later, Liberty's potent attack made it 3-0. Freshman Pima Iturraspe maneuvered into the circle on the right side and sent a centering pass to Charlotte Vaanhold. Vaanhold knocked a shot into the left side for her seventh goal of the year. With just under 40 seconds left in the opening frame, she scored on a rebound for her second goal of the day and eighth of the season. Liberty took a 4-0 lead into intermission.

• Daniella Rhodes' third quarter goal was the 55th of her career. She moves into a tie for second place with Agueda Moroni (55 goals, 2016-18) on the career goals list. Rhodes paces the team in goals (10), assists (10) and points (30).
• Defender Emily Dykema and forward Ellie Livingston both received their first career starts today. Dykema scored a goal, while Livingston notched her first career assist on Rhodes' goal.
• Bethany Dykema's goal was the 20th of her career. She has 70 points (20 g, 30 a) in 69 career games.
• In the Lady Flames' eight shutouts, they have outscored their counterparts a combined 49-0.
• Liberty outshot Villanova 24-2 in the game and held a 16-1 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Flames won six penalty corners while not yielding a penalty corner chance. This is the third time this year in which Liberty did not surrender a short corner in a match. Additionally, the Lady Flames have not given up a penalty corner goal in any game this season.
• In Liberty's eight BIG EAST wins versus the Wildcats, the Lady Flames have scored 43 goals while only allowing three.
• Liberty played its inaugural BIG EAST Conference game at the Villanova Field Hockey Field just over six years ago (Sept. 16, 2016). The Lady Flames won that contest by a 5-1 score.
