
Daels Scores Game Winner, No. 5 Liberty Wins 3-2 in Double OT at No. 12 Duke

Liberty freshman forward Julie Daels scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute, lifting the fifth-ranked Lady Flames to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over 12th-ranked Duke in double overtime, Sunday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Liberty improves to 9-1 on the season for the first time in school history. The Lady Flames' win is their first-ever victory over the Blue Devils. Liberty entered the game with an 0-6 mark versus Duke. Sunday's contest marked the fourth straight overtime game between the two squads. Duke sees its overall record dip to 3-9.
The Lady Flames faced an early 2-0 deficit, as the Blue Devils scored twice in the first 3:23 of the match. Liberty sliced the Duke lead in half (2-1) in the 12th minute on Jodie Conolly's third goal of the season and evened the game late in the third quarter (40:45) on Jill Bolton's 10th marker of the year.

Turning Point
Liberty goalkeeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen, the three-time defending BIG EAST Player of the Week, made three of her 12 saves in a 15-second span in the first overtime to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
Daels' goal came on the Lady Flames' sixth and final penalty corner of the contest. Following a Maddie Hosler insert and Lizzie Hamlett stick stop, Bolton swept the ball onto the stick of Daels, who deflected a shot past Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch for the victory.
Key Stats & Notes
• This is Daels' second goal of her young career, with both goals being game winners. The Bruges, Belgium native also scored what proved to be the game winner in the Lady Flames' 2-0 triumph at Temple, Feb. 27.
• Bolton's 10th goal of the season was the 38th of her career. She moves into fourth place in program history, passing Ashlee Krulock (37 goals, 2012-15). Bolton has scored 10 or more goals twice in her career and nine or more goals in all four of her seasons with Liberty.
• Iritxity Irigoyen has had back-to-back 12-save contests. The freshman from Buenos Aires, Argentina is 7-1 on the season with a 1.03 goals-against-average, .860 save percentage, 49 saves and three shutouts.
• The Lady Flames scored two of their three goals on penalty corners. Liberty has scored 10 goals off corners this season and surrendered its first penalty corner goal today.
• Liberty held a 6-2 edge in penalty corners in the game, including a 4-0 edge from the fourth quarter on. Duke outshot Liberty 17-11, led by five shots from Hannah Miller.
• Miller and Darcy Bourne scored the hosts' two goals in the first period. The Blue Devils' two-goal opening quarter marked the first time the Lady Flames surrendered multiple goals in a period, this season.
• Sunday's contest was Liberty's first double overtime game since Sept. 30, 2018 against No. 21 Wake Forest. It was also the Lady Flames' first overtime victory since a 2-1 triumph at No. 20 American on Oct. 6, 2016.
• Liberty is 4-0 in road contests in 2021.

Liberty will return to BIG EAST play next weekend what it travels to No. 17 Old Dominion (4-3, 4-2 BIG EAST) for a pair of games. The Lady Flames and Monarchs will play at 11 a.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex in Norfolk, Va.
Liberty swept ODU in a two-game series at the Liberty Field Hockey Field, March 6 and 7. The Lady
Flames claimed game one by a 4-1 score and earned a 2-0 shutout in game two. Liberty is 6-4 all-time against ODU, including a 5-3 mark against the Monarchs in BIG EAST games.
