
FGCU Earns 3-0 Sweep at Liberty

ASUN East Division leader FGCU pushed its wining streak to 15 matches, sweeping the host Liberty Lady Flames (25-9, 25-10, 25-20) on Friday at Liberty Arena.
The Eagles (22-4, 14-0 ASUN) have lost just three total sets in ASUN play, posting 12 sweeps in conference play. Meanwhile, Liberty (9-11, 5-8) has sustained two straight losses after winning three out of the previous four matches heading into this stretch.
Notable Numbers
• FGCU hit .462, the highest hitting percentage by a Liberty opponent this season. Liberty attacked at a -.014 pace, its second time this season hitting negative (both coming against FGCU). The Eagles led in kills (44-20), digs (30-20), blocks (10-3) and aces (6-4).
• Reigning ASUN Player of the Week Erin Shomaker hit a match-high .542 with 15 kills. Cortney VanLiew connected for nine kills at a .471 pace, while Aja Jones and Emma Szypszak posted five blocks each. Chelsey Lockey dished out a match-high 31 assists.
• Kate Phillips, Trinity Watts and Kennedi Sutter tied for Liberty’s team lead with four kills apiece, while Phillips and Kodat had six digs apiece. Amaya Williams dished out a team-high eight assists, while Caitie Mueller served up two aces.
Turning Point
• FGCU stormed out of the gates, staging a 10-0 run during the opening set. The Eagles hit .706 as a team in set one on the way to a 25-9 win. The guests nearly duplicated that result in the second set, winning 25-10.
• Liberty found its footing in the third set, sparked by two aces from Mueller to open the set. The Lady Flames led 11-8 before FGCU went on a 7-0 run to gain the lead at 15-11. Liberty battled into a tied at 17-17 on Phillips’ kill and again at 19-all on a block. However, the Eagles closed to the finish, winning 25-20.

• FGCU leads the all-time series against Liberty, 6-1. The Eagles have won each of the last three meetings after falling to Liberty 3-0 on Sept. 24, 2019 in the Vines Center.
• Liberty sits in fifth place in the ASUN East standings.

The Lady Flames wrap up their 2021 home schedule, hosting Stetson on Sunday. Liberty will honor six seniors (Lilly Kruse, Amelia Preston, Sarah Shanton, Aspen Thompson, Saige Weaver, Amaya Williams) with a Senior Day ceremony prior to Sunday’s match.
