The Liberty Flames baseball team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2022 season.
Liberty will open the 2022 season in Gainesville, Fla., with a three-game series with the Florida Gators, Feb. 18-20. The 2022 opener is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
The Flames then return home for a four-game homestand, starting Feb. 23. Liberty will host the North Carolina A&T Aggies for its home opener on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. The Flames will then welcome the Winthrop Eagles for a three-game homestand, Feb. 25-27.
2021 NCAA Regional Teams Fill the Schedule
Coming off a 41-win campaign in which they earned the second at-large selection to an NCAA Regional in program history, the Flames’ 2022 schedule will feature 18 games against 2021 NCAA Regional teams. Liberty is slated to face NCAA Regional squads Campbell, Duke, Florida, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Virginia and VCU. Eight of those contests are scheduled for Worthington Stadium at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
Home Sweet Home
With Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium expected to return to full capacity, head coach Scott Jackson’s squad is currently scheduled to play 30 games at home in 2022. Along with five home ASUN Conference series, the Flames will welcome Campbell, Canisius and Winthrop to Lynchburg for three-game home non-conference weekend series. Duke, High Point, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest are all part of Liberty’s midweek home contests.
Last season, the Flames posted a 24-2 mark at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium. Liberty’s record was its best in the nine-year history of the facility.
Midweek Home and Homes
Liberty is again scheduled for midweek home-and-home series during the season with Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. In addition, the Flames will meet 2021 College World Series participant Virginia, High Point, North Carolina A&T and Radford once in midweek games during 2022.
ASUN Features Divisional Alignment
This season, the ASUN Conference will feature two six-team divisions for conference play. Each team will play 30 conference games, facing each team in its division six times during the regular season. Liberty will be part of the East Division with FGCU, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, North Florida and Stetson. The West Division consists of Bellarmine, Lipscomb and North Alabama, along with conference newcomers Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State.
Eight teams will move on to the 2022 ASUN Baseball Championship at FGCU’s Swanson Stadium in Fort Meyers, Fla., May 25-28.
