
Liberty Falls to Jacksonville State 3-0

Liberty took on ASUN West Division leader Jacksonville State in ASUN crossover action on Saturday at Jacksonville’s Swisher Gymnasium, dropping a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-22) decision to the Gamecocks.
JSU improves to 19-4 on the season, including 9-1 in ASUN play. The Gamecocks are 4-1 against ASUN East Division teams. Meanwhile, Liberty falls to 8-9, including 4-6 in conference matches. The Lady Flames have gone 1-1 at this weekend’s ASUN crossover weekend and are 3-2 versus the ASUN West Division this year.
Liberty faces ASUN West Division opponents Central Arkansas, Jacksonville State and North Alabama this weekend. Meanwhile, those three West Division teams take on Liberty, Jacksonville and FGCU.
Notable Numbers
• JSU outhit Liberty .206-.143 for the match, as the Gamecocks led in kills (51-33), digs (53-45) and aces (2-1). The Lady Flames held a decided 14-3 advantage in blocks, posting double-digit blocks for the eighth time this season.
• Kylee Quigley led all players with 19 kills for the Gamecocks, followed by nine kills by Addie Halverson. Lexie Libs dished out a match-high 43 assists and Erin Carmichael collected a match-high 16 digs.
• Kate Phillips (.304) and Kennedi Sutter (.571) tied for the team lead with eight kills each for Liberty. Lydia Burts posted a match-high eight blocks, while Trinity Watts registered a career-high seven blocks and Aspen Thompson recorded six blocks. Leah Kodat collected a career-high 15 digs.
Turning Point
• Liberty battled back from large deficits in the first two sets but was unable to overcome them in a pair of setbacks, 25-18 and 25-21.
• The Lady Flames led a back-and-forth third set 20-18 after a Watts/Thompson block. However, JSU then went on a 5-0 run to surge ahead, 23-20. The Gamecocks converted their second match-point try, sealing the sweep 25-22 on Quigley’s 19th kill.
Quick Hits
• Tonight was Liberty’s first-ever match against Jacksonville State in volleyball.
• Liberty’s 14 blocks tonight were its most ever in a three-set match in the rally-scoring era (since 2001). The previous record was 13, set Oct. 10, 2014 against Campbell and being tied Oct. 19, 2018 versus Jacksonville.
• Williams passed Julie Sitler (1985-88) into 10th place all-time at Liberty with 2,076 career assists. Sitler posted 2,064 career assists.
• Watts is the fourth Liberty player this season to post at least seven blocks in a match, joining teammates Lydia Burts (four times), Aspen Thompson (one) and Madison Blane (one).
