As the Liberty women's soccer team starts the season on Feb. 7, the Lady Flames have been picked to finish fifth in the ASUN Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Liberty senior goalkeeper, Melody Jayroe, was named the ASUN Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year and senior defender, Cora Duininck, was tabbed as the ASUN Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Jayroe is coming off an exceptional junior campaign where she was named the ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year and was on the United Soccer Coaches (USC) All-Atlantic Third Team, as well as the USC Women's Scholar All-South Region Team. As a First Team All-ASUN honoree, Jayroe put together an impressive ASUN campaign allowing just two goals in eight games. Jayroe and the backline played its best soccer during conference play as they did not allow an ASUN team to score a goal during regulation. Jayroe ranks second in school history with 20 career shutouts, tied with Karen Blocker (2008-12), as the junior posted eight shutouts this season.
Duininck had a sensational junior season where she was a First Team All-ASUN honoree. Duininck has compiled an exceptional resume during her time at Liberty as she is a three-time all-conference honoree. A staple in the backline, Duininck has been exceptional playing as both a center-back and also an outside-back at times. Duininck started in all 17 games the junior played in this season as she helped Liberty post a league-best 0.25 goals against average during conference play. As a center-back, Duininck recorded five points this season with two goals and an assist. Duininck has now earned all-conference in all three seasons with the Lady Flames.
