Liberty midfielder Brianna McCaffrey has been voted the Big South Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for a second consecutive week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
McCaffrey has garnered the distinction now for a fourth time this season. She is the first Liberty women's lacrosse player ever to Big South Defensive, Offensive or Freshman of the Week four times in the same season.
"Bri gets better every day and every game. She is a selfless player that just wants to win games, so we see her being honored for her performance as special something," stated Liberty Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle. "She has a team first mentality, and it shows by the way she plays. I'm extremely excited to watch her continue to grow and flourish in this breakout season."
The junior from Boca Raton, Fla., once again contributed across the board in Liberty's home wins over William & Mary (non-conference finale) and Presbyterian (Big South opener), last week.
In last Wednesday's contests against William & Mary, McCaffrey scored three times and added six draw controls, two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Two of McCaffrey's three goals came in a stretch of 6:14 in the middle of the second half, putting the Lady Flames ahead of the Tribe, 8-5, in an eventual 11-7 victory.
Against PC on Saturday, McCaffrey tallied game highs in ground balls (eight) and caused turnovers (five) and a team-best six draw controls.
McCaffrey is currently No. 3 in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.91) and No. 16 in ground balls per game (3.55).
McCaffrey and the Lady Flames (8-3, 1-0 Big South) will compete against Gardner-Webb (2-9, 0-1 Big South) on Wednesday at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
