Women's Soccer Falls Short at FGCU

Liberty went toe-to-toe with the defending ASUN champion, Florida Gulf Coast, Thursday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex in the Lady Flames' final road match during the regular season. The Lady Flames made a late push but the Eagles came out with 1-0 win over Liberty.

FGCU came out the gates controlling possession and attacking on offense with 16 shots in the first half. Melody Jayroe was huge for Liberty in goal coming up with 11 saves on the night, giving Liberty a chance in the second half. The Lady Flames made a late push in the second half with five shots in the second half with four of those shots coming in the final 12 minutes of the game.

"We knew that Florida Gulf Coast was a quality team, having being ranked the top-25 this season and beating Power 5 schools. They came out with a lot of energy and a lot of pace and it caught our girls off guard. To our credit we battled and at the end of the game we had our chances. We weathered some storms and Melody (Jayroe) made some great saves to keep us in it and Devon (Sipala) hits the post so we were close and I hope that builds confidence for our players."

Liberty will return home to close out the weekend to face Stetson. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Osborne Stadium against the Hatters.
