Late-game heroics and stellar defense themed the day for the Liberty women's soccer team, as the squad hosted James Madison, Sunday afternoon, at Osborne Stadium. Despite the Lady Flames being outshot by the Dukes, 17-8, a game-winning goal from Gabrielle Farrell in the 85th minute off an assist from fellow freshmen Sierra Lam sparked the 1-0 victory.
Goalkeeper Holly Van Noord and the Liberty defense also had a big day, recording the first shutout for the Lady Flames, this season. The clean sheet marked Van Noord's 34th career shutout, giving her sole possession of the Big South record once held by Radford's Che' Brown (2010-13). Van Noord concluded the contest with 10 saves.
The Dukes' netminder Olivia Miller played in between the posts the entire contest, finishing with three saves. Along with the shot differential, JMU also held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Liberty moves to 2-3 on the season, earning its first-ever win over JMU. The Dukes, who entered the contest 6-0 all-time versus the Lady Flames, are now 1-5 in 2016.
Shots were at a premium in the first period, with JMU taking six attempts, compared to three for Liberty. The Dukes' Ashley Herndon had a look at the Liberty goal frame in the 23rd minute. However, Van Noord was there to make the stop, keeping the visitors off the boards.
Liberty's lone shot on goal in the opening frame came at the last second of the period. Junior forward Jennifer Knoebel fired at the JMU net right before the horn sounded, but Miller made the stop to keep the contest scoreless at halftime.
Things heated up during the second period, with the Dukes' attack forcing Van Noord to make nine saves during the stanza. The redshirt senior thwarted attempts on goal from seven different JMU players.
With just over five and a half minutes left in the contest, Farrell put the Lady Flames on the board with her first career goal. Just over a minute after checking back into the contest, Lam found Farrell inside the box on the left side. The forward then finished the play, sending a shot into the right corner of the net, ultimately setting up the 1-0 final.
Liberty hits the road on Thursday, squaring off with UNCG. Game time in Greensboro, N.C., is slated for 7 p.m.
