The Liberty field hockey team scored six first-half goals on its way to an 8-0 win over visiting Georgetown in BIG EAST play at the Liberty Field Hockey Field on Saturday afternoon.
Kendra Jones and Pippa Best tallied two goals apiece, Abby Julius had three assists and goalkeeper Allison Schaefer recorded her first shutout of the season in the win.
With the win, the Lady Flames improve to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas fall to 4-9 and 0-4 in league play.
"I am so pleased with the way the girls competed today. They executed the game plan well and came out in the first half with a lot of energy and firepower. We were able to generate a lot of attack today," said head coach Jodi Murphy. "Our defense also did a great job denying Georgetown attack opportunities in the offensive third. It was wonderful to have Allison earn her first career shutout. Mallory Fortenbaugh played a big role in that, as she had a tremendous defensive save to secure us earning our first shutout of the season."
Liberty scored its first goal of the game in the fourth minute. Julius sent a cross into the center of the circle, and Jones swept the ball past Hoyas goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki for her fifth goal of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.
In the 17th minute, Julius again sent a crossing pass, this time to Best. Best scored her second goal of 2016 in the left side of the goal cage to give the Lady Flames a 2-0 advantage. At 18:59, Jones tallied her second goal of the game, batting a ball into the goal off a pass from Agueda Moroni, to give Liberty a 3-0 lead.
Bethany Barr scored at 20:49 on a direct strike from the right side to give the Lady Flames a four-goal advantage. In the 25th minute, Best scored on another centering pass from Julius to give Liberty a 5-0 cushion. Alynn Richardsdon scored her team-leading sixth goal of 2016 off a rebound in the 30th minute to make it 6-0.
In the second half, Rachel Suter scored her first goal of the year to give the hosts a 7-0 lead. On a Liberty penalty corner, Moroni sent the ball into Cassidy Bremner, who passed to Bethany Barr. Barr found Suter inside the left side of the circle, and Suter drilled a shot past Skonecki for the goal.
Liberty's final goal came at 47:12 from Moroni. Bethany Barr sent a ball toward the goal cage, and Moroni tipped it into the right side of the goal.
Schaefer recorded five saves for the first shutout of her collegiate career. Skonecki made 17 saves in a losing effort. Liberty outshot Georgetown, 31-11, on the afternoon and held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners drawn. The 31 shots recorded by the Lady Flames are now the fourth-most in program history in a single match.
Liberty's eight goals scored marks the fourth time in program history the feat has been accomplished. The Lady Flames last tallied eight goals at UMass Lowell on Oct. 13, 2015.
Next up for Liberty is a trip to No. 1 UConn. The Huskies are currently the only unbeaten team left in the country at 12-0 and also boast a 4-0 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. Match time in Storrs, Conn., is set for noon next Saturday at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.
