For the third time this season, Liberty women's soccer freshman forward Gabrielle Farrell has been named the Big South Freshman of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference office earlier this afternoon.
Farrell previously won the honor in back-to-back weeks during the month of September. After another stellar week, the Langhorne, Pa., native now leads the Lady Flames in points (14), goals (5) and assists (4). She is currently tied for first in the Big South in total points with three other players.
On Wednesday, Farrell picked up her third game-winning marker of the year, scoring in the 76th minute against Longwood. The forward dribbled into the 18-yard box, eluding multiple defenders before lofting the ball over Longwood goalkeeper Maria Kirby to give Liberty the 2-1 win.
Of course, Farrell was not done on the week, recording six points on two goals and two assists in Liberty's 7-1 victory over Presbyterian on Saturday. Farrell put the Lady Flames on the board with a goal 83 seconds into the contest before adding an assist on Isabella Habuda's marker in the sixth minute. Following another helper to junior forward Jennifer Knoebel in the 21st minute, Farrell capped her scoring on the day with a second goal in the 30th minute. Farrell's performance marked the most points in a game by a Liberty player since Aimee Luurtsema (2008-11) had nine in a 6-3 win over UNC Asheville on Oct. 27, 2010.
Liberty continues conference play on the road this week, beginning with a meeting at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
