
No. 6 Virginia Remains Unbeaten Against Lady Flames

For the third consecutive year, the Liberty women's soccer team (0-1-0) kicked off its season inside Klöckner Stadium, squaring off with No. 6 Virginia (3-0-0) on Friday. Unfortunately for the Lady Flames, the Cavaliers remain unbeaten in the all-time series, taking the contest, 9-1.
Senior forward Aimee Luurtsema posted Liberty's lone tally thanks to a Megan Warner assist, marking the first Liberty goal against the Cavaliers in program history.
Virginia tallied the first point in the 17th minute, when forward Amber Fry found midfielder Morgan Brian, who buried a shot in the right corner of the net for the early advantage.
The Cavaliers tacked on another goal in the 23rd minute. Defender Oliva Brannon picked up her first goal of the season, heading the ball into the Liberty net off a Molly Menchel corner kick to make it a 2-0 contest.
Just before the 39th minute, Caroline Miller bent a shot in the right corner for the Cavaliers third goal. Virginia tacked on two more goals from Emily Perrin and Erica Hollenberg, respectively, to go up 5-0 at the half.
The Cavaliers outshot the Lady Flames 13-1 in the opening stanza. Making her return to the Liberty net for the first time since the 2009 season, goalkeeper Karen Blocker recorded one save during the half.
Miller found the net again for the Cavaliers in the opening two minutes of the second half, giving Virginia a six-goal lead. The forward picked up a hat trick just before the 54th minute, finishing on a Lauren Alwine cross making it 7-0.
In the 63rd minute, the Lady Flames' offense made a strong push toward the Virginia net. Silvia Betancourt passed it off to Luurtsema, who belted a shot from the right side that was stopped by goalkeeper Chantel Jones.
The Cavaliers added goals by Fry and Gloria Douglas to take a nine-goal lead at in the contest.
Luurtsema's goal occurred in the 88th minute, as she maneuvered around a Cavalier defender off Warner's pass, edging the ball past Jones into the left corner of the Virginia net for the 9-1 final score.
Blocker played the entire 90 minutes in the Lady Flames' net, posting three saves. Jones remained in the Cavaliers' goal for the duration of the contest, finishing with two stops.
The Lady Flames make their Osborne Stadium debut on Monday, hosting fellow Commonwealth competitor, Longwood. Liberty is looking to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Lancers at the Longwood Athletics Complex (Sept. 24, 2010). Game time for Monday's matchup is slated for 7 p.m.
