Tiffani Smith only gave up two hits and recorded 10 strikeouts to lead Liberty to a 3-0 victory over Charleston Southern, Friday afternoon, in Game 1 of a Big South Conference doubleheader in Charleston, S.C.
After two hitless innings, the Lady Flames' bats woke up in the top of the third, as Liberty scored a run on three hits to take a 1-0 lead.
Bridgett Woods was Liberty's first base runner of the day, reaching on a walk. After Cassie Hendrix singled through the right side, J'nae Jefferson dropped a blooper single into shallow left field, and Woods crossed the plate from second to give Liberty the early advantage, 1-0.
The Buccaneers recorded their first hit of the game in the bottom half of the third, when Melissa Adams led off with a single through the right side. After Megan Lombard fouled out to catcher Ashley Bensinger on a bunt attempt, Adams was forced out at second on a fielder's choice play on a Megan Hall grounder.
Hall then stole second and immediately took third on a Bensinger throwing error, but the inning ended on the next play when Shayla Cullum grounded out.
Smith turned up the heat in the next frame, striking out three straight Charleston Southern batters.
The Buccaneers made a charge in the bottom of the sixth, putting a runner in scoring position. With one out, Megan Hall singled up the middle and then stole second. But Smith struck out Shayla Cullum and Erin Kegley to keep the 1-0 lead intact.
The Lady Flames cushioned their lead in the top of the seventh, adding two runs on three hits and two Charleston Southern errors. Woods led off with a single to left, and pinch hitter Keely McMillon reached on an error by catcher Kegley on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Jefferson then singled to advance Woods and pinch runner Danielle Howard, and Jenny Law followed up with a single to right field to plate two runs, the second due to a throwing error by right fielder Kristin Kelleher, giving Liberty its eventual three-run victory.
The Lady Flames improve to 20-10 on the year, and 5-2 in conference play, having won their fifth-straight Big South game. The Buccaneers drop to 20-20-1 overall and 4-5 in the Big South and the loss snaps a three-game league winning streak for the home squad.
Liberty was paced by Jefferson and Law, who were each 2-for-4 with one RBI. Woods was 1-for-2 and scored two runs.
Charleston Southern was led by Hall and Adams, who each recorded one hit.
Smith (11-3) picked up the shutout win, only walking two batters and fanning 10 in the complete-game appearance. The win was the 30th of Smith's career and the dominating performance marked the seventh time in her three-year career she has struck out 10 or more batters.
Sondra Vetter drops to 7-11 after giving up eight hits and striking out six Liberty batters.
The two squads will face off for Game 2 of today's doubleheader later this afternoon.
