Warrington also struck out six batters in the contest.
The Spartans recorded the first hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning, when Jeanette Sauceda hit a grounder up the middle that was barely out of the reach of second baseman Cassie Hendrix. But Elizabeth Castaneda was out on the next play on an interference call when she bunted, and starting pitcher Katie Warrington fanned Danielle Wright and Casey Pomeroy to keep the game scoreless.
Meredith Baisden led off the top of the third by reaching on a fielding error by the Norfolk State first baseman, and she promptly stole second. After reaching third on a passed ball, Baisden crossed the plate when Danielle Howard hit a long double to right center, giving Liberty a 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Flames added another run to their lead in the same frame to go up, 2-0. After Cassie Hendrix drew a walk, J'nae Jefferson hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Howard to tag up for the run.
Liberty picked up another run in the top of the fourth. Kelly Strickland led off with a single to third base, and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Candice Vasquez. She then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amber DePasquale, and scored on a deep sacrifice fly to left by Kaylee West, putting the Lady Flames up, 3-0.
The Spartans jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth frame, scoring one run. Gipsy Ramirez reached on a fielding error by Strickland at shortstop, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jaime Raab. After Sauceda grounded out to second, Elizabeth Castaneda singled up the middle to score Ramirez, bringing the score to 3-1, in favor of Liberty.
Liberty exploded in the top of the sixth inning, scoring five runs on three hits and one Norfolk State error.
Jefferson extended the Liberty advantage to 4-1 to lead off the inning, busting a solo homer over the left field fence, her sixth of the year.
After Ashley Bensinger, Strickland and DePasquale drew three consecutive walks, Alyssa Velasquez entered the game to relieve starter Castaneda. West then reached on a fielder's choice to the second baseman, who bobbled the ball trying to force out DePasquale at second, and all runners were safe as Bensinger crossed the plate.
Baisden got aboard on a fielder's choice to the pitcher, who forced out Strickland at home. Howard and Jenny Law then recorded back-to-back singles to drive in two more runs. Then, with two outs, Jefferson struck out swinging but was safe at first on a wild pitch, allowing Baisden to score to put Liberty up, 8-1.
The Spartans never recovered, and Liberty walked away with the 8-1 win.
With their ninth consecutive victory, the Lady Flames improve to 29-11 on the year, while Norfolk State drops to 10-23.
Howard led the Lady Flames offensively, batting 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Jefferson and West each drove in two runs.
The Spartans were led by Castaneda, who was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
