
Lady Flames Dominate Rams, 8-0

With the win, Liberty improves to 4-0 at the tournament, after defeating Dartmouth and Kennesaw State on Friday, and defeating Akron earlier Saturday.
Liberty continued its streak of taking an early lead, scoring a run in the second inning and five more in the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
J'nae Jefferson drew a one-out walk in the top of the second, and advanced to second on an infield single by Cassie Hendrix. Jefferson later crossed the plate when Hendrix stole second, and Rhode Island catcher Nicole Massoni failed to throw her out, allowing Jefferson to score and give Liberty a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Flames turned up the heat in the top of the third, starting off with back-to-back doubles by Kaylee West and Kelly Strickland. Ashley Bensinger then singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw, allowing West to score.
With runners on second and third, Amber DePasquale singled to center field and was able to move to second, as Strickland scored and Bensinger moved over to third. Catcher Keely McMillon continued the offensive surge with a bunt single that scored Bensinger. With two outs, DePasquale scored on a wild pitch, and pinch runner Meredith Baisden crossed home when Hendrix reached on a Rhode Island error. The Lady Flames ended the third inning with five runs on five hits, and left one runner stranded.
DePasquale drove in a run in the top of the fourth with a shot through the left side that scored Strickland, who reached on a fielder's choice. After holding the Rams in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Flames tacked another run onto their lead in the top of the fifth when Danielle Howard crossed home when Strickland grounded out to shortstop.
Johnson and the Liberty defense fended off the Rams in the bottom of the fifth to seal the game with an 8-0, five-inning win.
DePasquale led the Lady Flames, batting 2-for-3 and driving in two runs, while Bensinger was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Rhode Island was led by Leah DiBussolo and Jackie Kampmeier, who recorded one hit each.
Johnson (1-0) picked up the win with the shutout, striking out three batters and giving up three hits in five complete innings of work.
Erika Narendran took the loss, giving up eight hits and striking out four batters in 3 1/3 innings.
The Lady Flames will conclude the Buzz Classic tomorrow morning, taking on No. 23 Kentucky at 9 a.m.
