With the win, Liberty remains unbeaten, running its record to 7-0 on the year. The mark is the second-best start to a season by the Flames in the 36-year history of the program. The 1995 Liberty team started its year, 9-0. Delaware State drops to 3-4 on the season.
The host Flames jumped on the scoreboard in the opening inning, with five runs on six hits. The first six Liberty batters had a hit in the first inning uprising. Left fielder Kenneth Negron (Sr., Kingwood, Texas) led off with an infield single and moved to third base on a single up the middle by second baseman P.J. Jimenez (Sr., Yucaipa, Calif.). Center fielder Curran Redal followed with a single to right field, plating Negron with the first run of the contest.
The next batter, third baseman Tyler Bream (So., Zelienople, Pa.) made it, 2-0 Liberty, with a RBI single. Catcher Nathan Thompson (Sr., Stoneville, N.C.) then laced a liner inside the left field foul line for a double, scoring both runners for a 4-0 advantage. After a single by designated hitter Doug Bream (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) moved Thompson to third base, right fielder Michael Robertson (So., Everett, Wash.) lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the catcher for a 5-0 edge.
Liberty added a run in the second frame. Shortstop Josh Richardson (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) opened the inning with a double and scored three batters later on a two-out single by Redal, upping the Flames advantage to 6-0.
For the third-straight inning, Liberty put runs on the Worthington Stadium scoreboard. With one out, Doug Bream was hit by a pitch and moved to second as Robertson reached on a Hornet fielding error. First baseman Trey Wimmer (So., Greenwood, S.C.) chased home the first run of the frame with a sharply-hit single to left. Richardson then plated Robertson with a sacrifice fly for an 8-0 lead.
Delaware State spoiled the shutout in the eighth inning. With two out, right fielder Matt Rizzuto singled to center field to score designated hitter Peter Broehl, who led off the frame with single, for the final score of 8-1.
Liberty starter Shawn Teufel (Sr., LHP, Tequesta, Fla.) not only was a beneficiary of the early inning run support, but the left-hander was in control throughout his six innings of work. He yielded only two hits, striking out eight Hornets and walking three.
Delaware State starter Jordan Elliott falls to 1-2 on the season. The right hander gave up eight runs with 10 hits over seven innings. He walked two batters.
Redal and Thompson each had two hits in the contest for the Flames, as eight of the nine Liberty starters had at least one hit. Limited to just three hits in the game, no Hornet had more than one hit.
Liberty and Delaware State meet tomorrow in the middle game of the three-game, weekend series at Worthington Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
