Flames Fly Past Hornets
3/6/2010 12:00:00 AM | Baseball
Liberty runs its mark to 8-0 on the season, the second-best start to a year in program history. Delaware State drops to 3-5 on the season.
The host Flames benefited from four walks and a batter hit by pitch to take a five-run lead in the first frame. The first three Liberty batters of the inning walked to load the bases and all came home on a bases clearing double by third baseman Tyler Bream (So., Zelienople, Pa.) for a 3-0 advantage. Bream later plated the fourth run of the frame, coming home on a throwing error by Hornet third baseman C.J. Bell. Designated hitter Nathan Thompson (Sr., Stoneville, N.C.),who walked earlier, scored on a wild pitch to give Liberty a 5-0 lead after one inning.
The Flames added single runs over the next three innings. Tyler Bream drove the run with a RBI ground out in the second, while first baseman Justin Sizemore (Fr., Newton, N.C.) doubled home a run in the third inning to put Liberty up, 7-0. In the fourth inning, Thompson connected for his third home run of the season, a blast over the left field wall, to give the Flames an 8-0 cushion.
Liberty pushed two more across in the fifth. Right fielder Michael Robertson (So., Everett, Wash.) had a RBI triple and Sizemore provided a run-scoring single in the frame.
In the sixth, the Flames batted around, scoring six runs for the final margin. Pinch hitters Justin Richardson (So., Lehigh Acres, Fla.), Doug Bream (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) and Jeff Jefferson (Jr., Danville, Va.) all drove in runs with singles in the inning. Second baseman P. J. Jimenez (Sr., Yucaipa, Calif.), center fielder Curran Redal (Sr., Moses Lake, Wash.) and Shortstop Josh Richardson (Fr., Cheaspeake, Va.) also had RBI singles in the stanza.
Liberty starter Keegan Linza (Jr., Salisbury, N.C.) benefitted from all the run support, running his mark to 3-0 on the year. The right-hander gave up only three hits in six innings of work.
Delaware State starter Zach Adkins drops to 1-2, after allowing eight runs on 10 hits over five innings.
Jefferson, Jimenez, Redal and Sizemore each had two hits in the contest for the Flames.
Liberty and Delaware State concluded their three-game weekend series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Worthington Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
