Frazee Ready for WNBA Playoffs Debut

Liberty alum Megan Frazee, now playing for the San Antonio Silver Stars, will get her first taste of the WNBA Playoffs Thursday night, when the Silver Stars host top-seeded Phoenix to open the Western Conference semifinals. Meanwhile, former Lady Flame Katie (Feenstra) Mattera, a late-season acquisition by the Chicago Sky, nearly helped her team reach the postseason.
San Antonio, which also employs former Liberty associate head women's basketball coach Olaf Lange as one of head coach Dan Hughes' assistants, finished the regular season with a 15-19 mark. The defending Western Conference champion Silver Stars will face the Phoenix Mercury in a best-of-three series, beginning Thursday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Game two is slated for 10 p.m. Saturday on NBA TV, with game three (if necessary) set for Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. on ESPN2.
Phoenix, led by the explosive scoring of Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter, posted the best regular-season record of any WNBA team, 23-11. However, the Silver Stars split the season series with the Mercury, 2-2, as the home team won all four contests. Frazee played well in San Antonio's two victories over Phoenix at the AT&T Center, averaging 10.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg.
For the season, Frazee tallied 5.0 ppg and 2.9 rpg in 29 appearances. She ranked No. 12 in the WNBA with 10.3 rebounds per 40 minutes.
On Sept. 1, Mattera joined her fourth different WNBA team, the Chicago Sky. The five-year WNBA veteran notched 5.5 ppg and 3.0 rpg in two appearances for the Sky, who were one of three Eastern Conference teams to close the season at 16-18. Unfortunately for Chicago, the Washington Mystics won the tiebreaker and claimed the fourth and final playoff berth.
Mattera played 15 games during the 2009 campaign, split between San Antonio and Chicago. Her final season totals included 2.7 ppg and 1.9 rpg. Mattera's third-quarter layup at Detroit on Sept. 6 gave her 1,000 career WNBA points.
