The WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars are gaining more of a Liberty flavor by day. The defending Western Conference champions signed 2005 Liberty alumnus Katie (Feenstra) Mattera to a free agent contract.
Mattera joins Megan Frazee on the Silver Stars' roster, after the team drafted Frazee with the 14th overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft. Head coach and general manager Dan Hughes also employs Olaf Lange, who was an assistant coach with the Lady Flames in 2005-06 and 2006-07, on his coaching staff.
"We are pleased to have Katie join the Silver Stars," stated Hughes on the Silver Stars' team website. "She will add an interior presence with strong rebounding, plus she is an outstanding teammate."
This will be Mattera's second stint in San Antonio during her WNBA career. The fifth-year pro spent her first two seasons with the Silver Stars. She was a unanimous selection to the 2005 WNBA All-Rookie Team, after averaging 8.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg and 1.3 bpg for San Antonio.
Most recently, Mattera spent the 2008 campaign with the expansion Atlanta Dream. She posted 6.7 ppg and 3.9 rpg in 33 appearances.
The Silver Stars open preseason training camp on Sunday. The team's first preseason game is a May 30 contest against Detroit in Traverse City, Mich. San Antonio will open the 2009 regular season one week later, when the Silver Stars travel to Phoenix on June 6.
