
Liberty Takes Game Two to Split Doubleheader

Liberty moves to 11-3 in the Big South and 23-11 overall. UNC Asheville drops to 4-13 in conference play and 7-28 overall. With the win, the Flames take the three-game weekend Big South series, two games to one. The triumph also marked the 500th victory over 31 seasons at Worthington Stadium.
The host Flames jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the second inning. Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) began the frame with a single into the hole between the shortstop and third baseman. The next batter, left fielder Joseph Feeley (So. Chesapeake City, Md.), walked, and both runners moved into scoring position on a balk. Designated hitter Long (Fr., Anderson, S.C.) followed by lining a double into the left field corner, bringing home both runners for a 2-0 lead.
After first baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C.) walked, both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by P.J. Jimenez (Yucaipa, Calif.). With one out and two already across, shortstop Matt Williams squeeze bunted home Long with the third run of the inning.
In its next at bat, Liberty added to its advantage with a four-run uprising. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) started the home half of the third inning with a drive over the right field wall. The blast, the right fielder's sixth round tripper of the season, gave the Flames a 5-0 lead. Two batters later, Tyler Bream reached on a fielding error by Bulldog shortstop Kevin Weidenbacher. Long promptly cashed in the baserunner for the second run of the inning after crushing a triple to the bottom of the left-center field wall. Wimmer followed with a run-scoring single for a 6-0 advantage. Jimenez followed with a single to score Wimmer, who had moved to second on a wild pitch.
UNC Asheville pushed across two runs in the fourth inning. With one out, third baseman Justin Schumer single. After the next Bulldog hitter was retired, first baseman Mike Vaughn doubled down the left field line, plating Schumer with UNC Asheville's first run of the contest. Designated hitter Robbie Keiser followed with a run-scoring single, cutting the Liberty lead to 7-2.
In the sixth inning, the Flames score a single run for an 8-2 advantage. After singling to open the inning, Jimenez moved to third on a double by Williams. Center fielder Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to the right field warning track, plating Jimenez.
Liberty upped its lead in the seventh inning with two more runs. With two outs, Long was hit by a pitch and moved to second on fielding error by Bulldog third baseman Schumer on a ground ball by Wimmer.
Jimenez then cleared the bases with a double to make it, 10-2 Flames.
UNC Asheville scored a run in the eighth on an RBI double by pinch hitter Derrick Hopkins. Liberty also plated a run in the eighth on Redal's sixth home run of the season.
The Bulldogs pushed across an unearned run in the ninth for the final score of 11-4.
Liberty starter Steven Evans (Jr., Amherst, Va.) picks up the win to move to 5-2 on the year. The left-hander allowed two runs on five hits through the first six innings. He struck out five and walked one. Andrew Willson (Sr., Cary, N.C.) earns his second save of the year, closing out the last three innings. The senior gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits over three innings. He struck out five batters.
UNC Asheville starter Michael Bogaert falls to 1-5. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on nine hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Jimenez paced the Flames at the plate with three hits. Long, Redal and Tyler Bream had two hits apiece for Liberty.
Catlin Carter had two hits for the Bulldogs.
Liberty continues its eight-game homestand, Tuesday. The Flames will welcome the Old Dominion Monarchs to Worthington Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
