Florida State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Carly Wynn led off the frame with a triple to left field, and scored the first run of the night on a sacrifice bunt by Kaleigh Rafter.
The Seminoles added to the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. After three singles and two doubles in the inning, Florida State extended the lead to four runs, 4-0, after two innings.
Amber DePasquale recorded Liberty's first hit of the game with a single up the middle in the top of the third. She was then caught stealing, followed by a Cassie Hendrix strikeout. The half-inning came to an end when Jenny Law grounded out to third base.
The Seminoles continued their strong offense in the bottom of the third, scoring three more runs.
Liberty jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning when catcher Keely McMillon smacked a double down the left field line, scoring Danielle Howard and Beth Bennett. Howard walked and Bennett reached on an error by Florida State third baseman Michelle Snyder.
Florida State enjoyed its third straight three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth after Liberty's defense committed two errors and relief pitcher Allyson Hudson tossed a wild pitch, giving the home squad a 10-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.
The Liberty offense woke up in the top of the fifth. Jefferson singled to shortstop, and then advanced to second on the throw. Law kept things going for Liberty with a single of her own, and Danielle Howard followed suit with a base knock up the middle to score Jefferson, making the score 10-3.
However, Florida State was able to wrap up the game in the bottom of the fifth. After Shayla Jackson singled through the left side, pinch runner Jessica Lola advanced to second on a fielder's choice play. A pitch from Hudson got by McMillon behind the plate and an errant throw by the sophomore to get Jackson out at third allowed the right-fielder to score the game-winning run.
McMillon led the Lady Flames, batting 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Howard was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Jefferson followed, as she was 1-for-2 from the dish with a run scored.
Terese Gober (9-2) secured the win in the circle, giving up one hit and striking out four batters in three innings of work. Sarah Ellis (1-6) took the loss, as she allowed seven runs on eight hits during three innings of work.
The loss drops Liberty's record to 0-2 in the tournament and 3-8 on the year, after the Lady Flames suffered their fifth setback in 2009 to a Top 25 ranked program. The victory improves No. 25 Florida State's record to 15-4.
Liberty continues play in the FSU Invitational, Saturday morning, with a matchup against Troy, scheduled for 11:15 a.m.
