Liberty falls to 0-2 in the Big South standings and 4-3 overall. Winthrop moves to 1-0 in the conference and 6-3 overall.
After each team attempted one shot through the opening 10 minutes of play, the host Eagles jumped on the scoreboard in the 11th minute. Daniel Revivo found Miguel Casajuana in the penalty area with a pass. Casajuana put the ball into the right-hand corner of the goal for his second marker of the season to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead at 10:18.
Liberty quickly countered, putting pressure on the Winthrop net. Joshua Boateng (Sr., F, Accra, Ghana) forced a save by Eagle goalkeeper Patrick Mitrovich in the 19th minute. Two minutes later, Chris Phillips (R-Fr., MF, Brownsburg, Ind.) kept the Winthrop netminder busy with a header shot, which was stopped.
The Eagles extended their lead in the 25th minute. Matt Skonicki scored on a pass from Casajuana for his fourth goal of the year, upping the Winthrop advantage to 2-0.
Seven minutes later, Said Abdi netted the third goal of the half for Winthrop, heading in a crossing pass from Skonicki.
Liberty cut into its host's advantage in the 61st minute of the second half. Boateng rocketed home a crossing pass in front by Justin Willoughby (Sr., F, Greenville, N.C.) to slice the Flame deficit to 3-1, at the 63:55 mark.
A shot by Liberty's Daniel McGarry (Sr., MF, Philadelphia, Pa.) in the 79th minute sailed high, as the Flames tried to close the gap between themselves and the Eagles. Boateng also got off an attempt in the 81st minute, which went wide.
Liberty was unable to get off any more attempts over the last 10 minutes, as Winthrop closed out the win, 3-1.
The Flames edged the Eagles in shot attempts, 10-9, while Winthrop held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Boateng led all players in the game with six shots.
Liberty goalkeeper Paul Gilbert (So., Rockvale, Tenn.) recorded three saves, while Mitrovich made five saves in the Eagle net.
The Flames continue conference play Tuesday night, when they host the High Point Panthers at Liberty Soccer Field. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
