Liberty Defeats Lynchburg in Final Tune-up

In the Lady Flames final preseason match, Liberty traveled across town for a scrimmage with Lynchburg College, coming out on top 3-1, Wednesday evening.
At Schellengberger Field, the Lady Flames and Lady Hornets went back and forth early in the first period, exchanging shot attempts. Liberty broke through late in the period, when defender Heather Bowling found an open Amy Oberlin for a shot just outside the penalty area. Oberlin blasted the shot past the Lynchburg goal keeper at the 2:56 mark to make it, 1-0, at the first break of the 30 minute period.
The Lady Hornets netted their lone goal of the match midway through the second 30-minute period, knotting the match at 1-1. After the goal, the rest of the stanza was a tightly played. However, the half ended with the Lady Flames on top, as midfielder Silva Betancourt was tackled inside the penalty area for a foul and penalty kick. Betancourt converted the kick to give the Lady Flames a 2-1 edge.
In the final 30 minutes of the evening, Liberty tallied its third goal. Sophomore Elia Lake found Betancourt open in the front of the net with a crisp pass, which the midfielder scored for her second marker of the game at the 26:04 mark.
The Lady Flames then held off the Lady Hornets to win the match 3-1. Liberty opens the season tomorrow night. The Lady Flames travel to Farmville, Va., to face Longwood at 7 p.m.
