With the victory, Tennessee moves to 37-7 on the year and 18-1 at its new home facility. The loss drops Liberty's record to 7-23-1 on the season.
Tennessee wasted little time taking an early lead, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. Kenora Posey led off the frame by drawing a walk.
After swiping her team-leading 30th stolen base of the year, Posey moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chandra Morgan. Posey scored when the Lady Vols continued to play small ball, as Tonya Callahan squeezed the shortstop in with a bunt.
Two batters later, Tennessee added to its lead when Tiffany Huff hit her third home run of the year, sending a two-run homer out of the park in right center.
The Lady Vols continued to add to their lead in the second, plating two runs with a two-out rally in the second. Posey started with a single through the left side of the infield, followed by her second stolen base of the game.
Morgan kept things moving for the home team, singling down the left-field line to drive in Posey. Starting pitcher Sarah Ellis proceeded to walk the next three batters with the third free pass to Huff forcing in pinch runner Nicole Kajitani, pushing Tennessee's lead to five runs, 5-0.
Liberty mounted its first threat of the game in the top of the fourth inning, starting when Cassie Hendrix broke up Megan Rhodes' perfect game by battling for a walk.
Following the perfect-game bid falling, the no-hitter was broken up when Ashley Williams sharply hit a single to left field.
However, Rhodes got a strikeout and two infield pop outs, leaving a pair of Lady Flames in scoring position, following a double steal by Liberty's first two base runners of the game.
In the top of the fifth inning, Shannon McKain started the top half of the frame by dropping in a single to center field. Pinch runner Jessica Leary took second on a sacrifice bunt by Elena Lampman.
And the move up proved beneficial for Liberty, as two batters later, Amber DePasquale singled to the gap in left center to drive in Leary to trim Tennessee's advantage to four runs, 5-1.
However, the Lady Vols put the game out of reach with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. During the frame, Tennessee got a two-RBI single to left center off the bat of Allison Fulmer, directly followed by a RBI double to left by Huff to give the catcher her fourth run driven in during the afternoon.
Liberty continued to threaten in the sixth, denting the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, when Beth Bennett pushed her hitting streak to 12 games. The junior collected a solo home run over the fence in left for her third round tripper of the year.
Liberty threatened for the third-straight inning, loading the bases in the top of the seventh inning. J'nae Jefferson led off the inning with a single to right center, while McKain and Elena Lampman drew walks.
But Rhodes got a strikeout and a ground ball back to the circle to pick up her eighth complete game of the season. The righty allowed two runs on five hits, walking three and fanning five during seven innings of work to move to 18-4.
Ellis suffered the loss for the Lady Flames, allowing eight runs on nine hits to fall to 2-12 on the season. The junior walked eight batters, as compared to four strikeouts during her 11th complete game of the season.
Huff led the Lady Vols from the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and four RBIs. Posey followed by going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Liberty's five hits during the contest were strung out among five different players. Williams, Bennett, Jefferson and DePasquale each were 1-for-3, while McKain was 1-for-2.
The Lady Flames and the Lady Vols will conclude today's non-conference twinbill, approximately 20 minutes following the conclusion of the first contest.
