With the sweep on the afternoon, Tennessee moves to 38-7 on the year, thanks to winning its 18th out of 19 home games this season. The loss, Liberty's 13th straight to the Lady Vols, drops the Lady Flames' record to 7-24-1.
During the baker's dozen run of games, Tennessee has been nationally ranked nine times, including last year when the Lady Vols were ranked No. 1 in the country.
Tennessee broke open a perfect game on both sides of the scorecard, when the Lady Vols exploded for three runs on four hits during the bottom of the third inning.
Erinn Webb opened the frame with a single through the right side of the infield, followed by her 12th stolen base of the year. Kelly Grieve moved the center fielder to third with a sacrifice bunt, which worked perfectly for the home squad when Lillian Hammond got a RBI single to second base.
Two batters later, Chandra Mogan slapped a triple to the fence in the right-center field gap, allowing Hammond to score. Tonya Callahan followed with her team-leading 44th RBI, by singling to center field and staking the Lady Vols to a three-run lead, 3-0.
Tennessee padded its advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Webb pulled a solo shot over the fence in right to give the Lady Vols a four-run lead, 4-0. The round tripper was the outfielder's fifth of the year.
The homestanding Lady Vols continued to add to their edge in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hammond started a two-run frame with a single to center field. Following a pair of infield outs,
Callahan connected on the team's third home run of the day and the third baseman's 12th of the year, hitting a two-run shot over the fence in left field to give Tennessee a 6-0 advantage.
Two of Liberty's four hits during the game came in the sixth inning, helping the Lady Flames scratch across the plate their first run of the contest. Amber DePasquale singled down the left-field line and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cassie Hendrix.
Ashley Williams then traded places with Hendrix at second, connecting on a double to left field to drive in DePasquale and getting the Lady Flames on the scoreboard.
Tennessee quickly answered back in the bottom half of the frame. Tiffany Huff opened the inning by drawing a walk, followed by pinch runner Kelsey Strander taking her ninth stolen base of the year.
Jennifer Lapicki kept things going for the Lady Vols, singling through the left side of the infield. Tennessee tried to pull off a double-steal play, but Stander was caught in a run down, while pinch runner Natalee Weissinger took third.
Webb followed by recording her second RBI of the contest on a sacrifice fly, lofting a ball to deep left to allow Weissinger to cross the plate with the game's final run.
Ashton Ward went the distance for Tennessee to record her team-leading 20th victory of the year (20-3). The righty allowed a run on four hits, while walking one and striking out six.
Dana Wheeler suffered the loss to fall to 4-6 on the year, as the sophomore surrendered three runs on four hits over the first three innings. Tiffani Smith finished off the final three innings, yielding four runs on six hits.
The Lady Vols got six of their 10 hits from the No. 7-9 slots in their line-up. Webb and Grieve were each 2-for-2 and Hammond was 2-for-3. Webb and Hammond both crossed the plate twice during the contest.
Conversely, three of Liberty's four hits came from the No. 1-3 spots in its line-up. Hendrix was 1-for-2, while Bennett and Williams were 1-for-3 apiece.
The fourth-inning single to left by Bennett pushed the junior's hitting streak to 13 games, while the RBI double in the sixth by Williams gave the senior nine-straight games with a base knock. DePasquale, Liberty's lone runner to find the plate, was 1-for-2 to account for her fifth-straight contest with a base hit.
The Lady Flames will return to the softball diamond tomorrow afternoon, when Liberty hosts in-state opponent Virginia. First pitch in the afternoon non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m., at the Liberty Softball Field.
