With back-to-back wins, Liberty improves to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the Big South. Presbyterian falls to 2-11-1 overall and 0-5 in conference play. The contest was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The first half was scoreless, as neither team was able to generate much offense during the stanza. None of the half's eight shots, five by Presbyterian and three by Liberty, were handled by either Flames' goalkeeper Andrew Madero (So., Tampa, Fla.) or Blue Hose netminder William Redmond.
Liberty took a 1-0 lead with the game's first goal in the 59th minute. Forward Cameron Chastain (Sr., Millersville, Md.) tapped in a pass from Chris Osborne at 58:09 to give the Flames an advantage. The marker was Chastain's second of the season.
The Flames upped their advantage to 2-0 at 79:36, as Joshua Boateng (Sr., F, Accra, Ghana) scored his ninth goal of the year. Forward Justin Willoughby (Sr., Greenville, N.C.) broke free and hit Boateng with a through pass, putting Liberty's leading scorer one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Boateng ripped a shot from the penalty area past a diving Redmond for the eventual game-winner.
Presbyterian sliced the Liberty advantage to 2-1 in the 83rd minute. Yinka Salaam netted his first collegiate goal when he headed in a corner kick from Chris Brophy at 82:28.
Over the final eight minutes, the Blue Hose could only manage a wide header in the 84th minute and a wide shot in the closing seconds against the Liberty defense, sealing a 2-1 Flames victory.
The two teams finished the game with 13 shots apiece. Liberty held a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Madero made two saves in the Liberty net on the afternoon, while Blue Hose keeper Redmond recorded three saves.
