Liberty freshman Tobias Pettersson has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Golfer of the Week, for events played Oct. 2-8.
Pettersson (Kalmer, Sweden) carded a two-over par 215 (73-72-70) at the prestigious Windon Memorial Classic (par-71, 7,067 yards) to tie for 13th in the event, which was his second collegiate golf tournament. The two-day, 54-hole event was played at the North Shore Country Club on Oct. 5-6. Pettersson finished two shots out of the top 10 and was the highest finisher among the 10 Liberty and Coastal Carolina golfers participating in the event. The 15-team field featured eight squads ranked or receiving votes in the preseason Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches poll.
Northwestern's tournament has an illustrious history, with current PGA TOUR members Joe Ogilvie, Tiger Woods, Luke Donald and Ben Curtis finishing as runners-up in the event. Donald and current PGA TOUR member Hunter Mahan are past champions, as are current Nationwide Tour member Tom Johnson and 2007 U.S. Amateur and U.S. Public Links champion Colt Knost.
Pettersson gives Liberty gives its second conference golfer of the week, after playing in only two tournaments. Preston Dembowiak took home the distinction on Sept. 18 after his performance at South Alabama's Palmer's Toyota Fall Intercollegiate.
Liberty returns to the links when the Flames host the fourth annual Frank Landrey Invitational at the Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonsville, Va.
