Liberty scored a goal in each half, as the Flames downed the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 2-0, for a Big South Conference men's soccer victory Thursday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
With the win, the Flames up their record to 3-1 in the Big South Conference and 8-3-2 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 0-5-0 in the conference action and 2-10-1 overall. The shutout was the eighth by Liberty this season. The Flames lead the Big South Conference in shutouts.
Liberty opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Forward Adrian Bumbut (Sr., F, Zaulau, Romania) took a pass from Chris Mandell (Jr., MF, Bowling Green, Va.) 10 yards out and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Flames' advantage. The marker was Bumbut's team-leading eighth of the season.
Riding a 1-0 edge, the Flames controlled play behind a strong defensive effort in the second half. Liberty allowed UNC Asheville only one shot in the period, as head coach Jeff Alder's team outshot the Bulldogs, 9-1, in the period.
The Flames came close to adding to it s advantage in the 67th minute. Josh Boateng (Jr., MF, Accra, Ghana) lofted a corner kick into the penalty area, which Mandell headed towards the net, forcing a save by Bulldog keeper Phillip Horner.
Liberty keeper Paul Gilbert (Fr., Rockvale, Tenn.) stopped the only Bulldog shot with 10 minutes left in recording his seventh shutout of the year. UNC Asheville's Nathan Neal hit a shot from eight yards out off a corner kick, which the freshman netminder knocked away.
Liberty sealed its victory at the 87:33 mark. Forward Justin Willoughby (Sr., Greenville, N.C.) scored his first goal of the year off pass from midfielder Juan Guzman (So., Charlotte, N.C.).
The Flames outshot the Bulldogs, 12-8, in the contest, while UNC Asheville held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Liberty's Gilbert made two saves in the contest, while Horner recorded two in the UNC Asheville net.
The Flames travel to Charlottesville, Va., Tuesday evening, for a non-conference match at national power Virginia. Game time at Klochner Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
