- Title:
- Associate Head Coach
A new addition to the Lady Flames’ coaching staff a year ago, Olaf Lange is now serving as Liberty’s associate head coach. In his role, he oversees overall game management, strategy development, scouting, team and individual development as well as supervising the team’s strength and conditioning program.
Lange came to Liberty with a wealth of experience as he spent 10 years coaching high-profile European basketball. During his time in Europe, he coached the likes of WNBA players Chamique Holdsclaw, Ruth Riley, Katie Feenstra, Nikki McCray, Michelle Timms and Murriel Page.
Lange spent the 2004 season as the head coach for Ros Casares Valencia (Spain), leading the team to the 2004 Supercup championship. The previous year, Lange had helped guide the Mitteldeutscher Basketball Club, a German men’s basketball team, to the FIBA Europe Cup title.
The Berlin, Germany native has also served as the head coach for the German national women’s basketball team (2001-03) and the under-20 squad (1999-2002). Lange was an assistant for the German men’s national team and the under-20 unit in 2003. Prior to his coaching career, he studied sport science in his hometown, at Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin from 1991-95.
“I couldn’t be more excited to enter my second year at Liberty,” said Lange. “I strongly believe that our program as well as our current team is on the verge of going to the next level. I am looking forward to contributing in whatever way possible and necessary to assist our program in achieving its goals.”
“I can’t be more pleased with the addition of Olaf to our coaching staff,” commented head coach Carey Green. “He is an excellent teacher of the game. He understands the game and is the best that I have ever been associated with at development of both the individual and team skills and concepts. His experience, especially from the highest professional ranks, adds an invaluable asset to our program. Olaf’s strength lies in a passion for the game and players as well as in a sensitive heart and discernment.”
Lange and his wife, Sandy Brondello, who is currently an assistant coach with the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars and a four-time Olympian for Australia, currently reside in the Lynchburg area. The couple has a son, Brody, who was born in February.
