Former Liberty track standout Michael Prettyman has returned to his alma mater this season as a member of the track and field coaching staff.
Prettyman walked onto the Liberty track and field team in the fall of 1992, but quickly began to display ability in the decathlon and pole vault. He placed 10th at the junior national meet in the decathlon in 1993. Owning a decathlon personal best of over 7,100, Prettyman finished third in the event at the 1997 IC4A meet.
A member of the 1996 IC4A championship team, Prettyman was 11 times All-East and won the 1997 IC4A pole vault. He vaulted over 17 feet on a number of occasions and still holds the Matthes-Hopkins Track record, 17-0.75, which he achieved in 1996. At the end of his career, Prettyman won the university’s 1997 Rock Royer Award.
While at Liberty, Prettyman began to lead worship at Convocation as well as Sunday and Wednesday services. He continued to lead worship and give concerts all along the East Coast after departing Lynchburg. Most recently, he served as worship leader for two years at First Baptist Church of the Islands in Savannah, Ga.
Prettyman earned a bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Liberty in 1997. He and his wife, Brandin, reside in the Lynchburg area.
