The 25th-ranked George Mason Patriots led from start to finish, downing the Liberty Flames, 12-0, Wednesday afternoon at "Hap" Spuhler Field.
Liberty falls to 21-10. George Mason, ranked No. 25 in the nation, moves to 26-5. The Patriots have won 21-straight games at Spuhler Field, currently the longest home winning streak in the country.
George Mason plated the game's first run in the opening inning. Leadoff hitter Spencer Wiggins opened the home half of the first inning with his first home run of the season, giving the Patriots a 1-0 advantage.
The host Patriots added to their lead in the second inning. Right fielder Shane Davis walked to begin the frame, and was promptly cashed in, for a 2-0 advantage, on a double by designated hitter Mark Hill. Shortstop Brent Weiss followed with a run-scoring single to center, making it, 3-0. Two batters later, center fielder Wiggins connected for his second home run of the game and a 5-0 advantage.
In the fourth frame, left fielder Scott Krieger tied the George Mason school career RBI record and upped the Patriot lead to 8-0. Krieger hit a three-run home run, his 12th of the year, giving the senior 201 career RBIs. First baseman Justin Bour followed with his 12th home run of the season for a 9-0 lead.
Krieger broke the George Mason career RBI record in the fifth inning, bringing home a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Patriots added two runs in the seventh inning for the final score of 12-0.
Liberty starter Zane Bator (Jr., RHP, Moses Lake, Wash.) takes the loss to even his record at 1-1 on the season. The first of seven pitchers in the contest for the Flames, Bator gave up five runs on five hits over 1 1/3 innings.
George Mason starter Kris Mengle picks up his first win of the year to move to 1-0. The Patriot right-hander did not allow a run on three hits over seven innings. He combined with two other pitchers to record the first shutout against the Flames this season.
Wiggins had five hits in the game to pace George Mason.
Liberty returns home, Friday, to begin a three-game Big South series against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
