LibertyFlames.com turns its attention to junior Summer Parker for the field hockey focus series. Parker notched her first career assist at Virginia on Monday.
The Lady Flames will now gear up for their BIG EAST opener at Villanova on Friday.
Parker, a native of Suffolk, Va., has competed in 24 career contests for Liberty, including all four games this season. The junior has scored two career goals.
With your first BIG EAST Conference game right around the corner on Friday at Villanova, what are your thoughts on being in the conference this year?
Parker: I think us being in the BIG EAST Conference is a huge opportunity to show our capability as a team. The BIG EAST is made up of many good teams, and we feel it is a privilege to be a part of this conference.
Talk a little bit about what the field hockey team does to help out in the community.
Parker: To help out in the community, we often go to local elementary schools and help the kids with homework, or like last week we volunteered at a local food bank. We also try and do more things in our offseason such as going to a nursing home once a week to just sit and talk.
As a junior, have you taken on an increased leadership role?
Parker: As a junior, I do feel as though I should be setting an example for the newer girls on the team. I like being able to answer their questions and show them what Liberty field hockey is about.
Does your hometown of Suffolk, Va. have a claim to fame?
Parker: My hometown, Suffolk, Va., is known for our peanuts.
What or who is your primary motivation for playing field hockey?
Parker: My family has really motivated me to try my best with everything. They were a big part of my decision to play in college. They have always been supportive and done everything they can in order to get me to where I am today.
What has been your favorite class so far at Liberty?
Parker: I have been every which way with my major, but I have now finally declared, graphic design. My favorite class would be the more hands-on art classes. I had a class last year called arts communications, and it was a class that taught us to have a more meaningful approach for our work, which I really enjoyed and ended up making some cool pieces in that class.
Are you looking forward to any particular convocation this fall?
Parker: I am most looking forward to seeing Tim Tebow this fall because of all the changes he is going through this year with transitioning to the MLB. I just think it would be pretty cool to hear his perspective and thoughts on the decisions he's been making, because I'm sure they haven't been easy.
