Monteith Named the CUSA Defensive Player of the Week

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty midfielder Avenley Monteith was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. Monteith helped lead Liberty to a 1-0 shutout performance, topping previously unbeaten Western Kentucky to open league play.
The senior receives her first-ever CUSA Player of the Week honor. She represents the second Player of the Week honoree for the Lady Flames this season (Ainsley Leja, Sept. 15).
Monteith helped hold the Hilltoppers well below their average to just nine shots with only four on goal. She led a midfield that restricted WKU's ability to control possession, limiting its scoring chances. She also played in the deep ball that led to the go-ahead, own goal in the 77th minute of the game.
Liberty opened conference play with its first-ever win over WKU in a contest between last season's No. 1 and No. 2 seeds entering the CUSA Championship.

Tennessee (8-2-2, 1-0 CUSA) on Thursday night and heading further West to meet New Mexico State (2-7-2, 1-0 CUSA) on Sunday afternoon.
