CORVALLIS, Ore. – Thanks to the stellar play of Michael Lugiano, Liberty remained in prime position for most of Round 1 of the NCAA Corvallis Regional on Monday.
However, the sophomore and the Flames stumbled on the No. 9 hole (par 4, 473 yards), Liberty's 18th hole of the day, to slide down the leaderboard.
Lugiano came to his final hole at the Trysting Tree Golf Club (par 71, 7,391 yards) with a clean card, including five birdies, to sit atop the individual leaderboard.
However, the CUSA All-Conference first team selection missed the green long on his approach shot and eventually closed with a double bogey.
Following the first 18 holes of the NCAA Regional, Lugiano is tied for seventh place with a 3-under par 68 after posting his team-leading 12th sub-70 round of the season.
As a team, Liberty played its closing hole at a combined 4-over par on Monday, lowering the Flames into a share of eighth place with a 2-under par 282.
Liberty was keeping pace with the lead groups for most of the day and remained inside the coveted top five positions until the final hole.
Following the conclusion of play on Wednesday, the top five teams from the NCAA Corvallis Regional will move on to play at the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. (May 29 – June 3).
Liberty is just two shots off the fifth-place position, which is currently shared by No. 19 Charlotte and No. 42 San Diego, with both programs signing for a 4-under par 280.
No. 43 Purdue leads the field after opening the event with a 12-under par 272. No. 6 Arkansas, the No. 1 seed in the regional, and No. 17 Oklahoma share second place after carding a 9-under par 275.
Regional host Oregon State is holding down the fourth-place position after carding an 8-under par 276 on its home course.
Following Lugiano on the leaderboard for the Flames are Brett Reid and Silas Haarer. The pair are tied for 33rd place after opening regional play with an even par 71.
The Flames will return to the Trysting Tree Golf Club on Tuesday for Round 2 of the NCAA Corvallis Regional. Play for Liberty, along with Georgia Southern and Xavier, gets underway at 11:25 a.m. ET/8:25 a.m. PT.
