CORVALLIS, Ore. – A career round by Michael Lugiano and strong play by Josh Ryan have the Flames in position heading into tomorrow's final round of the NCAA Corvallis Regional.
Lugiano matched his career low round with a 5-under par 66, while Ryan carded his seventh sub-70 round of the season with a 2-under par 69 during their second trip around Trysting Tree Golf Club (par 71, 7,391 yards).
The strong play by the pair of Flames moved Liberty up to a share of sixth place and just two shots off the coveted fifth-place position heading into Round 3 of the regional event.
Following the conclusion of play on Wednesday, the top five teams from the NCAA Corvallis Regional will move on to play at the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. (May 29 – June 3).
Liberty (282-280) currently shares sixth place with Georgia Southern (282-280). Both teams posted matching first and second round scores to get to their 6-under par 562.
No. 6 Arkansas, the top ranked team in the regional, enters the final round in fifth place, two shots ahead of the Flames and Eagles with an 8-under par 560 (275-285).
No. 17 Oklahoma blitzed the course today with a 19-under par 265 and holds a commanding lead with an overall score of 28-under par 540 (275-265).
No. 43 Purdue is in second place with a 20-under par 548 (272-276), followed by Regional host Oregon State, who is in third place with a 13-under par 555 (276-279). No. 30 UCLA is in fourth place with a 9-under par 559 (283-276).
Lugiano and Ryan both strung together impressive birdie streaks during their back nine holes, allowing them to post a score in red figures.
Lugiano birdied four holes in a row, capped by a lengthy birdie putt at the par-3 No. 17 hole (225 yards). The sophomore had a look at another on No. 18 (par 4, 454 yards), but he missed a putt inside of 10 feet for what would have been a new career 18-hole low score.
The stellar round allowed Lugiano to climb into a share of second place with an overall 8-under par 134 (68-66).
Lugiano enters tomorrow's final round having an additional opportunity to advance to the national championship. The top individual from a non-advancing team from each of the six NCAA Regional sites will advance to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship.
After a bogey-birdie-bogey stretch to start the second round, Ryan pieced together six straight pars to settle into the round.
Starting with a nice downhill putt from the back end of the green at No. 11 (par 4, 346 yards), Ryan posted four birdies over a five-hole stretch to get to 3-under par for the day before a bogey at No. 17 dropped him back one shot.
Ryan (73-69) enters the final round of the regional event tied for 35th place with an even par 142. He shares the 35th-place spot with teammate and CUSA Men's Golf Freshman of the Year Silas Haarer (71-71).
The Flames will be paired with two other teams on Wednesday trying to chase down a top-five spot during the final 18 holes of the regional.
Liberty, along with No. 7 Texas Tech (3-under 565) and No. 42 San Diego (even par 568) will be sent off the No. 1 tee at the Trysting Tree Golf Club, starting at 11:25 a.m. ET/8:25 a.m. PT on Wednesday.
