
Flames Move on to Match Play at CUSA Men’s Golf Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. - The Flames played their best golf of the CUSA Men's Golf Championship when they needed it most, pushing Liberty into tomorrow's match play event.
Liberty carded the best team score of Round 3 at the championship event, posting an 11-under par 277 on Wednesday at Texarkana Country Club (par 72, 6,969 yards).
The score allowed Liberty to climb from fifth place to a share of third place at the end of the 54-hole stroke play portion of the championship.
Liberty carded an overall 17-under par 847 (284-286-277) to share third place with MTSU (291-278-278), allowing both programs to claim the final two match play spots.
UTEP will be the No. 1 seed in the first match play event on Thursday after carding a 31-under par 833 (279-271-283). The Miners will take on No. 4 seed MTSU.
New Mexico State finished the stroke play portion of the event in second place with a 29-under par 835 (279-277-279). The No. 2 seeded Aggies will square off against No. 3 seed Liberty in the second match play round.
The two victors from the morning match play events will face each other during the championship round in the afternoon for the 2026 CUSA Men's Golf Championship title. The championship match play event will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Liberty, who is making its third-straight appearance in the match play portion of the championship, will be looking for its second CUSA title in three years.
During their inaugural season in the league, the Flames claimed the 2024 title, the program's eighth conference championship.
The Flames' 11-under par 277 on Wednesday saw all five Liberty golfers post a score in red figures, paced by freshman Silas Haarer's 4-under par 68. The rookie finished the stroke play portion of the championship tied for 11th place with a 4-under par 212 (69-75-68).
Michael Lugiano followed with a 3-under par 69, which included a chip-in eagle at the par-5, No. 12 hole (555 yards). The sophomore finished the stroke play portion of the event tied for 19th place with a 2-under par 214 (73-72-69).
Josh Ryan was Liberty's most consistent player during the first three days of play at the championship. Overall, the senior finished the event in 10th place with a 5-under par 211 (70-71-70).
Fellow seniors Ike Joy (2-under par 70) and third round substitute Brett Reid (1-under par 71) rounded out Liberty's under-par scores on Wednesday. Joy finished the stroke play portion of the event tied for 25th place with a 1-under par 215 (74-71-70).
The pair of match play events will start on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. ET/8 a.m. CT. Liberty's match against New Mexico State will begin on No. 10 (par 4, 432 yards).
