LYNCHBURG, Va. – After standout performances in a pair of home wins this past week, sophomores Josefina Tomasi and Dara Semmartin claimed BIG EAST weekly awards on Tuesday afternoon. Tomasi has been tabbed the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, and Semmartin is the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.
This is the second straight week Liberty, now the No. 9-ranked team in the nation, has earned both the BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors. Tomasi receives her first career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award. The forward was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week once last season and made the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on one occasion as well. Semmartin is the first Lady Flame since Jodie Conolly two seasons ago (Oct. 17 and 24, 2023) to earn back-to-back BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week recognitions.
Tomasi, a forward, paced Liberty in points (6) and tied for the team lead with two goals while adding two assists in two games last week. In Liberty's 4-1 win over James Madison on Wednesday in its home opener, she finished with a goal and two assists for four points. Tomasi's highlight-reel fourth quarter goal, a reverse into the top left corner of the cage, put Liberty ahead 3-1 and was featured on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays listing as the No. 3 play. Tomasi's first assist came on Luna Prieri's go-ahead goal (her first goal in a Liberty jersey) in the 38th minute for a 2-1 lead. Her second helper came on Tori Griffiths' first goal of the year in the 52nd minute.
In Sunday's 4-2 triumph over the Richmond Spiders, Tomasi scored her third goal of 2025 in the 35th minute on a penalty corner redirect. The Cañada de Gómez, Argentina native also made a defensive save in the win. She paced all Lady Flames in shots (8) and shots on goal (5) in the pair of victories.
Tomasi leads Liberty with three goals so far on the young season and shares the team lead with eight points while ranking No. 3 on the squad with two assists. The sophomore ranks 12th nationally in both points per game (2.67) and goals per game (1.00), leading the BIG EAST in both categories.
Semmartin, a defender, led all Liberty players with four assists in two games this past week. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native matched a program record with three assists against Richmond on Sunday afternoon. Her three assists were also a career high, and she assisted on the first, third and fourth goals of the match, all on penalty corners. Her third assist of the day on a Morena Giacosa short corner goal provided Liberty a 4-1 lead in the 47th minute.
Four days prior, Semmartin assisted on Giacosa's first career goal in the 31st minute to even the game at 1-1 in an eventual 4-1 win over the JMU Dukes. Semmartin and the Liberty defense held the JMU and Richmond attacks to a combined three goals, 13 shots and four penalty corners in the 120 minutes of action between the two matches.
Semmartin paces the team with five assists in the first three games. She ranks No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the BIG EAST in assists per game (1.67). The sophomore has 16 assists in only 21 career contests.
